- Bio
-
Simon Abeles lived from 1829 to 1862. His father was David Abeles and his mother was Leah Bloch. He moved to Missouri in 1844, two years after his brother, Adolph Abeles. Simon is recorded as a landowner on plat maps of the current-day Tyson Research Center in 1862 and 1870.
In addition to his brother Adolph, Simon had two sisters, Anna Abeles Taussig and Mina Abeles Kohn. Simon did not marry or have children, and he lived together with his sister Anna in their later years.
Simon’s brother-in-law, James Taussig, was a judge and mentor to later Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis, whose sister married into the Taussig family. Adolph also married a Taussig, Amalia Taussig Abeles. Simon’s nephews Robert Abeles and Benjamin Taussig would later co-found the Taussig-Abeles Lumber Company.
Simon Abeles was part of the Austrian Taussig-Abeles family group. These two families were intertwined by frequent marriages. Simon was one of the few family members during that time that was not part of or the result of a union that would today be considered incestuous.
