- This is a bill of sale for the purchase of an enslaved person named Jim by Henry Shaw. Henry Shaw purchased from the previous enslaver of Jim, now deceased, John J. Brown. Shaw bid $1010, which, being the highest, allowed him to purchase the enslaved person Jim. Marshall Brotherton(?) acted as the administrator. This ruling was made in the December Term 1851 of the Probate Court of the County of St. Louis, State of Missouri.

Know all Men by these Presents that
Whereas the Probate Court of the County of
St. Louis State of Missouri did at the December
Term 1851 of said Court order me Marshall
Brotherton administrator of the estate of John
J Brown deceased to sell at public auction to
the highest bidder for ready Cash a certain
Slave belonging to said estate named Jim
and advertised in said order as about thirty
years old, and I the said Administrator having
given notice of said Sale in the manner
required by said order did on the first day
of January 1852 at the south front door of
the Court house of the County of Holmes at about
the hour of twelve o Clock M. expose said
Slave for Sale at public outcry to the highest
bidder for Cash, and Henry Brown became
then and there the highest and last bidder
for said Slave at the price and sum of
One thousand and ten Dollars, said Slave
was stricken off and sold to said Henry Brown
for that sum, Now therefore in consideration
of the premises and of the sum of One
Thousand and ten Dollars to me in
hand paid by said Henry Shaw I do
hereby convey and transfer to him said
Slave all the right title and claim that
said John J Brown had to said Slave
at the time of his death to have and
hold said Slave to him and his heirs
executors and administrators forever
In witness whereof I have hereunto
set my hand and seal this deed
day of January 1852
