Artists depicted the wonderous landscapes of North America and its Indigenous populations with a blend of adoration and skepticism. Flora and fauna were presented as otherwordly, and the landscapes themselves as untouched holdovers of paradise. Yet, underneath the appreciation was a longing dread of the unknown.
