Here are some highlights of awards Gass won: Doctors of Humane Letters from five colleges and universities, Rockefeller and Guggenheim grants for fiction, four Puschart Prizes, American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters Award for Fiction and Merit for Fiction, numerous Best American Essays, three National Book Critics Circle Awards for Criticism, a Pen/Nabakov Award, an American Book Award, and a Lannan Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award.
