Gass's seventh, and last, collection of essays, Life Sentences, included studies of a highly influential short story writer (Katherine Anne Porter), novelists (Henry James and Malcolm Lowry) and a poet (Elizabeth Bishop). It also contained an essay about his bibliophilia, "I Live in a Library," first published in St. Louis Magazine, and included here.
