US President McKinley at the Fair Francis understood the importance of influencing the public’s perception of the Fair. Early on he created the Division of Press and Publicity and tasked it with overseeing publications such as the Bulletin. Monthly coverage starting in 1901 chronicled all aspects of the fair, from construction to noted guests such as the President of the United States. -

Panels from Chinese Pavilion Wood with bone inlay. Detailed panels made by artisans from China adorned the interior of the Pavilion. When the Fair ended the Chinese government gifted the structure and all attached decorations to David R. Francis. However, as with most buildings at the Fair, it was built as a temporary structure and was soon disassembled. Newspaper’s reported that some decorations on the Chinese Pavilion began disappearing as soon as the Fair ended. The official salvage company auctioned off all disassembled structures, including the Pavilion. Many of these delicate inlay panels found their way to local families and antique shops. -
Official Call by Prince Pu Lun of China on David R. Francis Seated on the left of David Francis, Prince Pu Lun was the first member of the royal family in China appointed as commissioner to a world exposition. This honor, along with Pu Lun’s constant praise of the fair, highlighted the Chinese government’s enthusiastic support for stronger U.S.-China relations. -
Menu, Reception for the Visit of Prince Pu Lun, May 6, 1904 Francis hosted a reception to celebrate both Prince Pu Lun’s visit, and the formal opening of the Chinese Pavilion, designed after the Prince’s country home in China. In honor of the occasion, Prince Pu Lun gifted the Official World’s Fair Band $100 to split among themselves, and offered $20 to the Jefferson Guards. The World’s Fair Bulletin wrote that his kindness was “an illustration of the liberal and handsome way in which members of theImperial Household of China do things.” -
