- Rather than using a “fish out of water” image, the cover for the first edition showed an actual photo of dead fish floating in oil-laden water—killed in their own element.
- To Williams’ chagrin, her editor at Knopf didn’t get behind Ill Nature (it was published by The Lyons Press), and it didn’t get reviewed in The New York Times. It did garner attention though and has had two softcover printings since.
