Lucie Brock-Broido, The Master Letters
Lucie Brock-Broido, The Master Letters. Alfred A. Knopf, 1995. Copy with handwritten dedication to Bang.
Brock‑Broido was a professor of creative writing and director of poetry at Columbia University, where Bang received her MFA in poetry. The two became lifelong friends. The title The Master Letters refers to the two letters by Emily Dickinson addressed to “Dear Master.” In this collection, Brock‑Broido invents a series of new letters, drawing on Dickinson’s own poetic devices and extending the tradition of the epistolary.
