Modified accordion-fold format, with additional leaves attached to alternating folds. In a cardboard slipcase with cutout features made to resemble an at-home COVID test.
Full printed beige stiff-paper boards; bound tue-mouche, with yap edges and exposed sewn hinges; cover lettered in spring green; in a stiff paper folding portfolio.
Nine sheets of thin laid paper, each folded and framed at the sides with mesh gauze to resemble surgical face masks. Each 'mask' depicts an outdoor scene or streetscape, with additional details and text of a poem revealed between the folds. Two additional 'masks' provide a summary at the beginning and the full text of the poem, signed and dated by the artist, at the end. All laid in a clear resealable plastic bag.
"In winter 2023 Alyson printed the letterpress originals in Portland, OR with 14 pt Garamond from the Dale Guild Foundry on her Chandler and Price Pilot Old Style. The letterpress covers were printed back in Portland by Alyson using 24pt Garamond English Italic and 8pt Univers Light Roman from M & H Type. Once shipped back to Oakland, the books were finished and bound in spring 2023 by Zach using a Singer Series 7-11, with final edition of 200"

The artist recalls her experience of the COVID-19 pandemic from March, 2020 through November, 2021 as a student at Washington University in St. Louis, unable to go home to China. She creates a series of postcards to send to her family in Chengdu, chronicling her daily life and depicting the loneliness of a campus in lockdown with stark pen-and-ink drawings.
