Witless Warmongers: Depictions of Germans from WWI-WWII

curated by Lena Humble

Warning: within this exhibit there is disturbing imagery that depicts hateful ideology, such as nazism, white supremacy, and nationalism. Acknowledging that the curator of this exhibition does not condone the messaging behind these harmful images, and wishes to emphasize the importance of how learning and understanding this material can be insightful into further deconstructing these ideologies.

Similar portrayals  of Germans were represented in Illustration between the two World Wars, but further examination shows characteristics that differentiate how the population was depicted during each war.. Instead of the dehumanization and fear tactics that were prevalent within the illustrations during the World War I era, the second World War Tended to curate an image of Nazis and Germans as being diminishable, which resulted in rendering the enemy within a comical style despite the egregious acts being committed by Nazis at the time.
